Recycling

Residents are reminded that burning recyclables is not permitted (Township Ordinance #67). The following are generally considered to be recyclable –

  • Plastic bottles and containers (1 & 2). Clean and dry them. Put the cap back on them.
  • Food and beverage cans (tin & aluminum).
  • Paper (copy paper, newspaper, magazines). Make sure they’re dry.
  • Flattened cardboard and paperboard. For pizza boxes, make sure there’s no attached food residue.
  • Food and beverage containers. Make sure they’re clean.

Residents are responsible for providing their own trash and recycling containers. Any type of can or container can be used as a recycling bin,  as long as it is clearly labeled RECYCLING. The Township office has free recycle stickers for residents to label their bins with.

The Dauphin County Recycling Center – located at 1625 South Cameron Street, Harrisburg, PA 17104 – is where residents can recycle certain items that are not accepted by Valley Waste. To learn more, go here. A list of acceptable items can be viewed here. The Dauphin County Recycling Center is open Monday – Friday 8:30 am to 4:15 pm (closed holidays), NO SATURDAY HOURS.

Household Hazardous Waste

Household Hazardous Waste are those wastes produced in our households that are hazardous in nature, but are not regulated as hazardous wastes under federal and states laws. Each person in Pennsylvania produces an average of four pounds of HHW each year for the total of about 25,000-tons per year statewide. Some examples of HHW are paint, pesticides, pool chemicals, drain cleaners, batteries, and motor oil.

The Household Hazardous Waste Pickup Program previously offered by Dauphin County and Waste Management is currently NOT available to Dauphin County residents. Residents are to dispose to any HHW with their regular trash pickup. Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection website states the following:

DEP strongly urges residents of the commonwealth to properly dispose of their unwanted HHW materials. However, if your community does not have a collection program or you must discard the materials prior to the next scheduled event, you may legally discard them in your regular trash pickup, provided:

  • You have read the label and complied with any disposal directions.
  • Liquids have either been allowed to evaporate (if water based) or absorbed (if non-water based) on some material such as vermiculite, cat litter, or sawdust, so that there are no freestanding liquids).
  • The remaining residue has been packaged to prevent leakage while the material is being transported to the disposal facility.
  • The material is placed out in small quantities, over several collection periods.

For more information, please visit https://www.dep.pa.gov/Citizens/RecyclingDisposal/HouseholdHazardousWaste/Pages/default.aspx. We will update residents if and when a Household Hazardous Waste Pickup Program becomes available again.
